Beats bring their A-Game in a new World Cup Commercial

The best commercial for the World Cup thus far, doesn’t come from any of the usual suspects. No, this one comes from the premium headphone brand, Beats by Dre.

Some of football’s biggest names, Neymar, Bacaray Sagna, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Blaise Matudi, Cesc Fabrigas, Daniel Sturridge, Chicharito, Jozy Altidore, Luis Suarez, Mario Gotze and Robin Van Persie feature in the emotive campaign, ‘The game before the game’.  Shot beautifully by Nabil Elderkin, we follow our heroes as they engage in their pre match rituals. The commercial builds to a thumping crescendo with the soundtrack, “Jungle” by Jamie N Commons & The X Ambassadors. So Nike, Adidas and Puma, be warned; the gauntlet has been dropped.

Okay people. This one’s long overdue and a day late for a midweek mix, but trust me it’s worth the wait.

This week’s mix is a chilled out affair. Some nice downtempo trip hoppy goodness. I remember first listening to this stuff in the late 90s. I was introduced to the likes of DJs Food, Shadow, Cam and Krush, Mr Scruff and Roots Manuva by my buddy’s Big Nick and Rod Burgos. I can recall many late Saturday nights on Long Street in Cape Town at the now non-existent Cafe Miam and Orchard Bank. Good times.

A Multi-Coloured Escape Pod by United States of Audio features a great selection of some of the finest music on the iconic Ninja Tune label.

Sit back and tune out folks. And big ups Nicky and Rodney.

Love never felt so good | A less creepy homage to the King of Pop.

I’m not a huge fan of the witchcraft that brought Michael Jackson back from the grave for the Billboard Awards last week.

And though I’m more than a little torn about this whole posthumous Xscape album business, I feel that the video for the Justin Timberlake duet, Love never felt so good, pays fitting homage to the King of Pop, with references to some of his most iconic moments. The song is pretty catchy too.

Spring has finally sprung and the sun is making a more regular appearance. This week’s mix conjures up thoughts of lazy summer days. As you listen to Gorilla Smoothies by Bongholio Iglesias, let your mind wander to warm, sun-soaked weekends and cold beers. Enjoy.

I first discovered TSAW (Ten Songs a Week) on a design website that was showcasing their incredible retro-inspired album covers. Created by French Graphic Designer, Jean Mosambi, the fantastic design aesthetic of these covers is matched perfectly by his insanely eclectic music mixes. As the name suggests, Mosambi releases a new 10-track mix each week. These mixtapes move effortlessly between genres from Rare Groove to really interesting World Music and hip hop and Electronica. Since the mixes are fairly short, I’ll be hitting you with four this week. Consider it an apology for my infrequent posting of late.

For more of these great mixes follow TSAW on mixcloud. And be sure to check out Jean Mosambi’s magnificent design work at

Have you heard | I’d die without you – Childish Gambino

Have a listen to this fantastic cover of PM Dawn’s nineties classic by the infinitely talented Childish Gambino. I love this dude.

When Vince Gilligan created Breaking Bad, he brought us one of the greatest shows of all time. The show was brilliantly accompanied by the most incredible soundtrack ever. Take a harrowing trip down memory lane with Walter and Jesse with this week’s midweek music mix. There were many Breaking Bad-inspired mixes on 8tracks, but the best one undoubtedly comes from MaxxProject. The 3hr 36min mix features a comprehensive list of the music from all five seasons. Enjoy.

Ah Wednesdays. The I’m so glad it’s not Monday but it’s so far from Friday day. To help get you over the midweek hump, I’ll be sharing mixes I’ve been listening to from various sources including Mixcloud, Soundcloud, Mixcloud, 8tracks and NPR.

Up first is a great mix from London DJ, Ali B on Mixcloud. Oh Shit! (Paradise) Vol.2 moves seamlessly between Funk, Soul, Blues and Hip Hop and is bound to make you bob your head and completely forget about that pile of work on your desk. Enjoy.

Have you heard | Parallax – Hip Hop Philosophy

Check out this great new video from London rapper, Parallax off his debut EP, Depth Perception. Great boom bap sound that’s a throwback to the more conscious golden era of Hip Hop.
