Neymar Jr and Nike shooting for gold in Brazil

As we head into the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, be sure to look at the feet of a certain Brazilian superstar. Nike has unveiled the GOLD HYPERVENOM SPECIAL EDITION boot to be worn by Neymar Jr.

The shoe is inspired by Neymar’s childhood. As a young player, no doubt dreaming of achieving World Cup glory for his native Brazil, Neymar would spray his boots gold. The team at Nike worked painstakingly to create a boot that reflected the aspirations of a 12 year old Neymar.

“When we met with Neymar he told us that when he was 12 he used to spray paint his boots gold. He said that he always wanted a pair of gold boots but that he couldn’t find them anywhere. So we took that insight and decided this summer would be the perfect moment to create this boot for him,” said Denis Dekovic, Nike Football Design Director.

The biggest challenge was getting the gold tone perfect so it had the right spray-painted look. We worked closely with Neymar to get it as close to how he remembered the colour when he would apply it as a kid. We’re all delighted with the results and can’t wait to see it on pitch.”

As the great number 10 looks to shine in the latter stages of the tournament, his footwear will ensure he looks the part.

Beats bring their A-Game in a new World Cup Commercial

The best commercial for the World Cup thus far, doesn’t come from any of the usual suspects. No, this one comes from the premium headphone brand, Beats by Dre.

Some of football’s biggest names, Neymar, Bacaray Sagna, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Blaise Matudi, Cesc Fabrigas, Daniel Sturridge, Chicharito, Jozy Altidore, Luis Suarez, Mario Gotze and Robin Van Persie feature in the emotive campaign, ‘The game before the game’.  Shot beautifully by Nabil Elderkin, we follow our heroes as they engage in their pre match rituals. The commercial builds to a thumping crescendo with the soundtrack, “Jungle” by Jamie N Commons & The X Ambassadors. So Nike, Adidas and Puma, be warned; the gauntlet has been dropped.

Kanye ditches the swoosh for the three stripes over royalties

kanye-west (1) by yo az

The biggest ego in entertainment and self-proclaimed creative genius has ended his design partnership with Nike and announced a partnership with adidas.

Kanye West’s megalomania is really tired, but I’ve got to say that Nike’s dropped the ball on this one. Don’t get me wrong. I love Nike, but I would think given the enormous success of the Air Yeezy sneaker series (the limited edition Yeezy sneakers have been resold for as much as $2750), that the folks in Oregon would be trying a little harder to keep the Lord Yeezus happy.  The reason for West’s exit is a dispute over royalties. Kanye claims that Nike offered him ‘a bigger sandbox to play in’ but would not give him royalties because he’s not a professional athlete.

The old me might have taken this Nike deal because I just love Nike so much, blah, blah, blah,” he said, “But the new me with a daughter takes the Adidas deal because I have royalties and I have to provide for my daughter.”

Based on the impressive Yeezy series, I’m really excited to see what Kanye and adidas come up with. That brand could certainly use a breath of fresh air. Hopefully Yeezy won’t be putting teddy bears, wings and tales on sneakers. Sorry Jeremy Scott.

Light up the slopes this winter with the Nike Snowboarding LunarENDOR QS

If Marty McFly were a snowboarder in Back to the Future, he’d definitely be hovering above the slopes while wearing these insane boots.

The Nike Snowboarding LunarENDOR QS has an LED lit swoosh that’s powered by a lithium battery embedded in the boot and at the flick of a button you can initiate the awesomeness sequence. Now if all the boot had to offer was a light up swoosh, it would be pretty lame. Thankfully Nike has jam packed these bad boys with all of their top of the line technology.

They boast Nike Lunarlon foam which provides comfort and was developed to absorb impact on landing and give you a more responsive ride. And you’ll be able to customize your ride with a flex line system that gives you three different levels of stiffness. The Flywire inner lacing ensures a great fit and the liner and stobel technology-reinforced shell keeps the warmth in.

If you want to make a splash on the slopes (in a good way, not like my face plants on the bunny hill), The Nike Snowboarding LunarENDOR QS will be available in limited quantities at and Nike SB stores.

… and speaking of lighting up the slopes, check out this amazing video called LED Surfer by Jacob Sutton, featuring pro snowboarder, William Hughes.

The garments which play to the strengths of both brands, were produced in limited runs of 300 and will be available for purchase from select Levi’s and Canada Goose stores. Twin brothers, Justice and Innocent Mukeli, together with their best friend, Vuyo Mpantsha are the trio behind a fantastic blog called I See a Different You. Well calling it a blog is a little bit of an understatement. It’s more of a movement born out of a frustration with the way their native Soweto was being perceived in the media. The imagery that people associate with the township is mostly created by people from outside Soweto, is often negative and doesn’t truly capture the way the locals experience it.

Armed with a keen sense of style and digital cameras, the crew from I See a Different You explore the place they grew up in with warm, nostalgic images, a fresh perspective and more importantly through their own lens.

They’ve traveled to Tokyo, Senegal and Paris to expand their project and here’s what they had to say about it in an interview with online publication Dazed Digital:

“I See A Different You started in Soweto and it’s changed people’s perceptions of Soweto. Where do we want to take it? We want to take it to the whole world,” says Vuyo. “We want to do I See A Different You China, I See A Different You Atlanta, Jamaica. Brazil too. We just want to take it to places we’ve never been to, places that most people in my country have never been. The problem with South Africans is that they don’t travel, so with this thing we want to change their perception of the world.”
