Archy Marshall aka King Krule is only 19, but this baby faced singer’s music conjures up a certain nostalgia. Maybe that’s because it reminds me so much of Shane MacGowan of The Pogues or even Joe Strummer of The Clash. Perhaps it’s the fact that the music is described as Darkwave, the genre popularized in the 80s by the likes of Joy Division, The Cure and Depeche Mode. Whatever it is, his music definitely has a distinct English swagger about it and I love it.
Marshall first made his mark as Zoo Kid when he released his single Out Getting Ribs in 2010. That single was recorded in his bedrooms with his friends Francis North and Thelonious McCabe. It’s as King Krule, however that he’s garnering some much deserved attention. He’s been nominated for the Sound of 2013 Poll by BBC. His debut album, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, was released on 24 August 2013 and features gems like Easy Easy and Out Getting Ribs. I’m excited to hear what he comes up with next and hope this guy keeps making music for a long long time. LONG LIVE THE KING.
